Welcome to Second episode of Top 10 Best Series. In this series we will uncover top 10 best things or moments across different niches & subjects. Today we will start this episode with Top 10 best performing sectoral indices & themes of 2025 for Indian stock market. 

Share Market is always game of patience , right valuations buying, fundaments & technical analysis. In Today’s episode we will uncover such indices & themes which have outperformed so far this year to date 2025 April . NSE offers lot of sectoral indices & themes for tracking sectoral wise journey & focus themes for investors. We will focus on sectors & themes which have outperformed & given positive returns so far in this year,














We will start with sectoral indices first. Nifty have more than 10 indices that tracks different sectors like banks, financial services, FMCGs , Auto and many other sectors. We will discuss about those indices which have given good returns this year so far 

  1. Nifty Bank 

The Nifty Bank Index comprises of the most liquid and large Indian Banking stocks. It provides investors and market intermediaries a benchmark that captures the capital market performance of the Indian banks. The Index comprises of maximum 12 companies listed on National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). 

Nifty Bank Index is computed using free float market capitalization method. Both HDFC Bank & ICICI Bank are more than 50% constituents by weight in this index. Nifty Bank has given +7% return so far this year with both giants leading way towards positive return

  1. Nifty Financial Services

The Nifty Financial Services Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the Indian financial market which includes banks, financial institutions, housing finance, insurance companies and other financial services companies. The Nifty Finance Index comprises of 20 stocks that are listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). 

Nifty Financial Services Index is computed using free float market capitalization method, wherein the level of the index reflects the total free float market value of all the stocks in the index relative to particular base market capitalization value. Along with Banks, it comprises of NBFCs & insurance companies like Bajaj Finance , Bajaj Finserv, Jio Financials, Shriram Finance. Nifty Financial Services has given whopping +10.2% return so far this year with both giants leading way towards positive return

  1. Nifty Financial Services excluding Banks 

The Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank Index which aims to track the performance of portfolio of stocks from the Financial Services sector other than Banks. The largest 30 stocks from eligible basic industries are chosen based on 6 month average free-float market capitalization. Index stock weights are based on their free-float market capitalization. Stock weights are capped at 25% each. It has given + 11% return till date. 

  1. Nifty FMCG

The Nifty FMCG Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of FMCGs (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) which are non-durable, mass consumption products and available off the shelf. The Nifty FMCG Index comprises of 15 stocks from FMCG sector listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It has given slightly nominal return 

  1. Nifty Oil & Gas 

The Nifty Oil & Gas Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the companies belonging to Oil, Gas and Petroleum
industry. The Nifty Oil & Gas Index comprises of maximum of 15 tradable, exchange listed companies. It consists of stocks like Reliance Industries, ONGC , BPCL , IOC & others. It has given slightly nominal return 

Continuing our discussion for Top 10 best performing sectoral indices & themes of 2025 for Indian stock market, We will discuss thematic indices now. Nifty have more than 10 indices that tracks different themes like defense, consumption, tourism  and many other sectors. We will discuss about those indices which have given good returns this year so far. 

6. Nifty Defense 

NSE Indices has developed the Nifty India Defense Index which aims to track the performance of portfolio of stocks that broadly represent the Defense theme. From the Nifty Total Market index, stocks forming part of eligible basic industries or those which obtain at least 10% of revenues from the defense industry are eligible to be included in the index and are chosen based on 6 month average free-float market capitalization. Major Stocks are BEL , HAL and others,  + 4% return till date. 

7. Nifty CPSE

  Nifty CPSE Index has been constructed to facilitate Government of India’s initiative to disinvest some of its stake in Central PublicSector Enterprises (CPSEs) through ETF route. The index comprises of select 10 CPSEs. The index has a base date of Jan 01, 2009 and base value of 1000. Power Grid, NTPC & BEL, + 3.5% return till date. 

8. Nifty Commodity

The Nifty Commodities Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of a diversified portfolio of companies representing the commodities segment which includes sectors like Oil, Petroleum Products, Cement, Power, Chemical, Sugar, Metals and Mining. The Nifty Commodities Index comprises of 30 companies that are listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Reliance , NTPC & Ultratech are top stocks, + 4% return till date. 

9. Nifty Rural

NSE Indices has developed the Nifty Rural Index which aims to track the performance of stocks from the Nifty 500 Index which represent the rural theme. The largest 75 stocks from eligible basic industries are selected based on 6 month average free-float market capitalization. The weight of each stock in the index is based on its free-float market capitalization. Bharti, ITC & SBI are 3 major stocks , + 4% return till date. 

10. Nifty Infra

Nifty Infrastructure Index includes companies belonging to Telecom, Power, Port, Air, Roads, Railways, shipping and other Utility Services providers. The Index comprises of maximum 30 companies listed on National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). It has given slightly nominal return
